Cristo Rey Network’s Putting MATH Education to Work Initiative Expands into Fifth Cohort of School Teams
The Cristo Rey Network is pleased to announce that seven Cristo Rey schools have been named recipients of Cohort V to launch and implement Putting Math Education to Work, a network-wide initiative aimed to dramatically advance student achievement in mathematics. Generously funded by The Howley Foundation, this multi-year engagement by schools includes robust professional development designed and delivered by the Silicon Valley Math Initiative (SVMI) to develop the instructional capacity and support of Cristo Rey math teachers and school principals.
Cohort V Schools include:
Dallas: Cristo Rey Dallas College Prep
East Bay: Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School
Miami: Cristo Rey Miami High School
Oklahoma City: Cristo Rey OKC Catholic High School
Research Triangle: Cristo Rey Research Triangle High School
Tampa: Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School
San Jose: Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School
“Since 2018, Putting Math Education to Work has been promoting high levels of student engagement in mathematical thinking by improving teacher practice through cross-network teacher collaboration, lesson study, and student work analysis sessions,” said Cristo Rey Network President and CEO Elizabeth Goettl. “Cohort V schools will implement this social justice informed approach to transform math learning from a gatekeeper to a gateway.”
Cohort V schools join 22 additional Cristo Rey schools in Cohorts I-IV that continue to be actively engaged in the program to ensure that every Cristo Rey student can access and master the mathematical knowledge and skills to be college-ready.
Each participating Putting Math Education to Work school commits to the entire math team and one school leader to gather ten times, on average, over the course of two years in this shared growth effort. Targets are established, using objective measures, to assess students’ math growth and attainment. The Silicon Valley Math Initiative facilitates a comprehensive effort to improve mathematics instruction and student learning, based on high-performance expectations, formative assessment, use of student work to guide instruction, and application of evidence-based instructional practices.
